GERBIL TEAM GOES
From Dresden to Banjul for a good cause.
Although the name Dresden-Dakar-Banjul refers to the famous rally from Paris to Dakar, this rally has other goals. It’s about team spirit, adventure and supporting local social projects in the Gambia. Each participating team is committed to donating their car upon arrival. It will then be auctioned in a public auction and the proceeds will go to the projects of the charity organization Breitengrad e.V. On average, this will bring together between € 70,000 and € 90,000 per rally. The trick here, the used rally cars often achieve even higher prices than in Europe, as they can still serve here for a long time as a means of transport.
19 DAYS, 8 COUNTRIES, 6,619 KM
Starting point is on 8.11. 2019 in Dresden, the route to Gibraltar to the ferry port drives each team tindividually. The crossing takes place together with the other teams. From Morocco there is then a predetermined route that teams can drive, but not necessarily have to. The fixed meeting place is again in Ad Dakhla in the Western Sahara. From here it continues with all team together in a big convoy, sometimes with a guide directly through the dunes of the Sahara. Mauritania and Senegal are also crossed to finally reach the destination in Banjul / Gambia (expected Arrival on 28th November 2019).

It is probably the combination of driving, Africa and adventure which appeals to me. I have traveled to West Africa several times and the continent has fascinated me. I have seen there both: the great poverty, which still prevails in large parts, but also the entrepreneurial spirit of the startup scene. The money gained through auctioning the car flows directly into the local social projects, which I will also visit.
